According to Better Health Channel, Australian men are more likely than Australian women to get sick from serious health problems, are less inclined than women to take an active role in maintaining their health, or seek professional help for problems, particularly those of an emotional nature.
So, what can we do to help change this?
Firstly, we can increase our awareness. With the complex and somewhat weird world we are currently living in, it’s important more than ever to be aware of our health and that of our loved ones and our mates. Stress, economic uncertainty and strain on relationships impacts our wellbeing and health. This can happen to all of us, regardless of gender, age or where we live. But together we can get through these changing times and looking out for and after each other can help reduce isolation and perceptions of stigma that may be out there about reaching out and getting support. There are some great programs to support men in seeking help when we need it (see websites at end of post below). If you have any questions about your health your GP is also a good place to start.
I believe that sometimes we may not realise how timely that phone call, text, or check-in may be. Contacting and talking with our mates is important. You don’t have to have the answers, but listening and giving your time can help. It’s also great to spend time out doing something you enjoy.
