Following is some information about Sumin and an introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine:

Sumin was born in Korea and raised in New Zealand, she is a qualified Acupuncturist and has a lifelong interest in health. Her goal is to further develop her skills and successful career working with clients to help them achieve and maintain optimal health. Sumin’s approach to treatment is based on the principles of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine which identifies the illness as being caused by the body being out of balance. This involves our Chi, blood, yin and yang. Identifying factors that contribute through the influence of lifestyle, food intake and sleep habits is a part of this treatment modality. Diagnostic tools are used such as viewing the tongue and taking the pulse. The treatment of acupuncture is then administered for the areas of the body that correspond with the findings of the assessments done during these initial and subsequent consultations.

Sumin is also studying nursing and can draw on the practices of this training to enhance her use of techniques that have been around for thousands of years. As she stated when asked why she believes in the use of acupuncture, it is because “it works”.

The background theory for this well-known treatment supports the evidence of its usefulness. Acupuncture can help relieve pain, including from headache, migraine, menstruation and muscle aches. Sumin has also worked with clients who experience anxiety and has had feedback with reports of improved sleep after sessions. The relief of stress is also another positive outcome.

For those with a fear of needles, Sumin explains that acupuncture is very different to having needles in western medicine. Some people fear the pain, but most are surprised how thin these special types of needles are and how painless the experience can be. They are nothing like the needles we associate with injections. There are also some points on the body that are more sensitive than others. However, if this is still a concern, there are options such as acupressure (no needles), ear seeds and Sumin said she will even demonstrate on herself so you can see how it all works! (Some of us prefer to just close our eyes the first time and then we are fine)

Acupuncture involves the insertion of thin sterile needles through the skin at specific points on the body. These points are where the qi (vital energy) flows within the meridians. Once the needles are inserted, they are left in the body for 20-30 minutes.

During or after the needle insertion you may experience different sensations varying from tingling, mild pain, dullness and others. This is a result of the acupuncture needle stimulating the movement of qi within the body.

Acupuncture is a safe and effective practice and has minimal side effects. If any are felt, then the body will usually restore to normal within minutes to days depending on your condition and this can be discussed with your practitioner if needed.

Depending on the severity of your health condition, the number of sessions needed to get the full benefit of this treatment can vary from 5 to 15 treatments. These should occur along with lifestyle and dietary changes which are discussed at appointments.

The aim of this approach to wellness is to optimize your health by restoring energy and balancing your body system. It’s a natural, traditional and effective way to feel amazing.
