We all know that technology can make life easier, with faster access to information, immediate purchasing options, and the ability to do what we need to online from just about any location. But with convenience has come the physical toll on our bodies.
How is your posture while using a device?
Are you looking up from the screen regularly?
Did you get up to take a walk around or have you been sitting for hours?
Have you done your regular stretches?
At Feel Amazing in Chatswood we see people needing treatment where poor posture from scrolling, hunching over a keyboard, or neck strain from never really looking up from a device has caused muscle tightness from overuse.
The human body wasn’t designed for a sedentary lifestyle, for repetitive movements, or fast-food intake for that matter. This only reinforces the idea that just because something is convenient, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s good for us.
With many of us heading back to work or preparing for study, now is a timely reminder to focus on some simple measures to make using technology a positive experience. So, where should we start and what can you do to help your body?
- Listen to it – your body will be whispering to you, so pay attention and be kind towards what it’s telling you. Otherwise, it might start screaming (pain anyone??)
- Take regular breaks to stretch, increasing circulation and nerve flow
- Treat symptoms that come up before they become serious or chronic
- Be active, keep moving – in whatever capacity that is for you
- Get enough sleep (this cannot be overemphasised)
- Try and reduce inflammation in the body, so watch those food choices
- Book in regular treatments to address health concerns, reduce stress, while improving your range of movement, so you can take part in the activities of life
- Put down the technology every now and then to engage with others and be mindful to stop to enjoy the moments that matter.
Our bodies have the capacity for healing, with the right input, environments, and doing the things we know are good for us.
